Active aero, explained: speed starts with efficiency

· racesinghpoint

Why the movable wings of 2026 serve a different purpose from DRS.

The FIA’s explanation of the 2026 rules describes two aerodynamic configurations: Straight Mode reduces drag, while Corner Mode restores downforce. Both front and rear wing flaps are involved.

Unlike the former DRS system, active aero is designed primarily to conserve energy and can be used at designated points regardless of the gap to the car ahead. Overtake Mode provides a separate electrical assistance mechanism.

The useful distinction for viewers is between reducing drag and deploying extra energy. For legal detail and later amendments, the FIA regulations register remains the authority.
